Melbourne’s own Closet Straights have just unveiled ‘Zadie’, the first track to be lifted from the four-piece’s highly anticipated debut LP, which is set to drop independently on Friday, 15th May before it’s given its ceremonial christening at the Worker’s Club on Friday, 29th May.

Closet Straights was born out of singer-songwriter and frontman Alex Lashlie’s desire to see his compositions fleshed out on the live stage, which gives the songs a simple, troubadour-like quality reminiscent of The Velvet Underground and The Vaselines.

However, once the rest of the band comes in, each with their own singular inspirations and influences, Lashlie’s songs reach the far-out regions of spaced-out jangle pop and the folksy qualities of a classic country rambler, often within the same song.

The band have been receiving regular airplay on local community stations RRR and PBS as well as Triple J and have supported the likes of Immigrant Union and Eaten By Dogs. Following a busy 12 months during which they received a coveted Arts Victoria Grant, it looks like there’s a bright future for the Closet Straights. Visit the band’s Facebook page for more info.
