Sydney’s Oh My My have just offered up one of the most immersive singles you’ll find anywhere this year by way of the dreamy ‘Lover, Lover’.
Having been on the scene for a few years now, fans of Oh My My would already know the emotional power that the pair serve up with each and every release. Now, as they share their second track of the year, ‘Lover, Lover’ showcases the duo’s penchant for darker sounds and tones, setting the devastating story of a heartbreak against an eclectic soundscape.
Recorded at Sam Thomlinson’s home studio in Sydney before being mixed by Northeast Party House’s Malcolm Besley and mastered by Studio 301’s Leon Zervos (Troye Sivan, Peking Duk), ‘Lover, Lover’ is a track that not only showcases their exceptional production, but one that is born from real-life experiences.
“There was an ease to writing this song that felt natural, necessary and pretty magic,” explains Tim Quaife. “Once Sam spit out the line, ‘Lover, Lover’, everything fell into place for me lyrically.
“Coincidentally, I was in the midst of a pretty traumatic break up and processing some very intense emotions. It all just spilled out and by the time we were done it felt somewhat triumphant. As if I was putting a very firm stamp on a painful part of my life. Cathartic.”
While the track originally began life on the guitar, the tune gradually changed form before becoming what it is today – one that embraces vulnerability and emotional impact while still maintaining that unique individuality they manage to assert across their catalogue.
“We flirted with a few different versions, but in the end the original felt right,” Thomlinson explains. “It’s a little different for us, but I think it still has the darkness it needs to convey the heartbreaking sentiment of the lyrics.”
