There’s so much that can go wrong when interviewing musicians, from jokes that fall flat, to jet lagged or hungover musicians who just don’t want to be there, or even leaving your disparaging notes behind for the musician to find afterwards.

Awkward interviews are nothing new, but thanks to the elephant-like memory of the Internet there are scores of them rattling around YouTube and social media to ensure that the worst of them will never be forgotten, perhaps much to the pain of bands and journalists alike.

Their 2009 documentary The Story Of Anvil has made them famous the world over, following seemingly endless years of energy-sapping tours de force marked by dismal organisational conditions. But even Canadian cult metal act Anvil weren’t prepared for what might have just taken the crown of the most uncomfortable musician interview yet.

The interview was conducted by a guy who goes by the name “Necrosexual”, which should be your first clue that this won’t be an ordinary interview. And by the confused looks on Anvil’s faces, the don’t think so either. In fact, through out the video as several priceless moments when their faces seem to be crying out “who the hell organised this interview?”

The first question, “what is the most brutal way you would off yourself?”, gets the interview off to an interesting start, with a bemused Anvil meekly answering that they’d probably just go to sleep or take a lot of drugs.

For what it’s worth, Anvil take the bizarre encounter in their stride, and play along until the interviewer pulls out “The Phallus Of Malice”; a cucumber he was hiding in his crotch the whole time. At that point, even they’ve reached their limit, as the Necrosexual closes out the interview by devouring the cucumber, and we really mean that in every sense of the word.

Anvil are back with their new studio recording Hope In Hell, and they’re coming to Australia to celebrate. The album presents guitarist/vocalist Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow, drummer Robb Reiner and their bassist Sal Italiano in top form, highly dynamic and full of energy from the first to the last note.
