Blue Mountains electronic duo Hermitude have been a big deal in their homeland for a while now, but it’s only the last couple years that music lovers overseas have managed to catch on to the serious noise the pair are making.
The release of the duo’s fifth album, Dark Night Sweet Light, back in May has taken things to a whole new level for the band both at home and abroad and it looks as though they’re poised to blow up in the coveted US market.
The boys are currently Stateside for a spate of shows and the trip has yielded some notable successes for the Ukiyo hit-makers, including their inclusion in a new Samsung commercial for their new smart watch.
Most recently, the duo performed a fire DJ set during a square-off between NBA teams the Chicago Bulls and the Brooklyn Nets in New York. There certainly aren’t many Aussie bands that can stake a claim to that.
It’s all just par for the course for the duo, however, whose overseas profile has been steadily rising in recent years. They’re fast becoming one of the most in-demand live acts in the US, racking up some major festival appearances.
This year alone has seen them perform at Lollapalooza, Governor’s Ball, Wakarusa, Counterpoint, and Osheaga. All this comes after the pair took on SXSW, Summer Camp, Lighting In A Bottle, and BUKU Music + Art Project.
“The US tour was great. We played some huge festivals, some of the biggest shows to date we’ve done, like Lollapalooza and Hard festival, and we did a bunch of club shows as well,” Luke Dubber told Tone Deaf in October.
“There’s a great following, it’s really starting to kick in over there. And then there’s parts of America you go to and there’s not as much of a following… we’d play in LA and San Francisco and New York and Chicago and get really great numbers and then go to Minneapolis and play to really small crowds.”
“It’s a gradual process over there and we try and go over as much as we can just to maintain a presence.” They’re certainly doing a good job of it. The pair have one final show in the US before heading to Europe and then back home for the biggest Aussie tour of their career.
