Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are undoubtedly one of the wildest and most enigmatic Aussie bands out on the scene today. With a penchant for stellar live shows and delivering killer tunes, you’d think there’s nowhere else they could go, right?

Well, 2017 saw the debut of the band’s own sold-out festival; Dr Noggin-Floggin & The Liquid Friends. With this year’s event kicking off at Perth’s Rosemount Hotel next month, it’s a huge affair that contains some pretty amazing bands, including the likes of Grievous Bodily Calm, Old Blood, and much more.

With just a month to go until it all takes place, we had a chat with the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ singer Jack McEwan, and got him to tell us all about every band on Dr Noggin-Floggin & The Liquid Friends’ stunning lineup.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets talk us through Dr Noggin-Floggin & The Liquid Friends

Superego FKA POW! Negro

Easily one of our favourite Perth bands in the last decade. Superego found a way to mix hip-hop, rock, jazz and a crazy contemporary funk style into one of the loudest, high energy performances you’ll see in Australia.

We’ve been lucky enough to play some festivals with these heroes and every show has been a treat to watch. 10/10 musicianship, 10/10 performance, 10/10 bouncy castle flips.

Old Blood

We started our careers supporting these boys alongside bands like Red Engine Caves and The Love Junkies. Old Blood have a style of music that whether you’re on the waters or ten beers deep you’re going to be captivated for the entirety of their set.

They mix cleverly crafted guitar tones, unique chords and harmonies with one of the best rhythm sections WA has under it’s belt – all while being fronted by soulfully uplifting preachings endemic to the Papa. I’ve prayed to him on many occasions.

The Floors

Another of Perth’s gargantuan heavyweights. The first ever show I attended in Perth was The Floors, and from that moment forth I’ve not had a haircut since.

Individually; three of the best musicians Perth has produced, together; one of the most amazing live bands in the sub-continent. It’s a gritty blues experience that makes you appreciate rock music all over again.

New Talk

FKA Rag’n’Bone, New Talk have added dark, theatrical punk to the long list of genre’s invented in Perth. They’ve been honing in on a style for a few years to create a unique sound which is very much their own.

A great rhythm section, diverse guitar tones and a mahoosive vocal range create layers upon layers of thunderous alternative rock. They actually beat my old band in a battle of the bands once, but I’m not salty about that any more…

Sly Withers

The ‘Australiana’ music genre (if that’s a thing) is a rapidly growing movement that mixes rock, punk and heavy grunge with meaningful lyrics accompanied by great songwriting. Easy? Wrong. To craft a song like Sly Withers takes years of practice, yet these guys manage to pump them out.

Tracks like ‘Closer ‘and ‘Nike Shoe’ demonstrate how they’re hyper-aware of the always evolving genre field and are intuitively adding their progressive twist to Australian music.

Jack Davies & The Bush Chooks

One of Fremantle’s shinning lights at the moment – not that it needs any more.

A brilliant songwriter who has that rare ability to control the pace of a room with great lyrics, matched with a six or seven piece band that lulls you along for the ride. Expect big things from this man!

Grievous Bodily Calm

The sonic equivalent to a pack of crayons. Every member of the band is a time traveller, and they’ve basically been kind enough to come back to 2018 and share what music is like 200 years from now.

A rare treat when a band like Grievous come around.

Pot Plant House Party

One of Perth’s freshest gems, rising through the ranks and creating a buzz on their own. Really great band with loads of energy that are already packing out venues.

I saw these guys while I was working behind a bar and by the end of it, I’d clocked off early and joined in the madness. Solid band name too – definitely a big band for the future.

Izatang

The newest addition to the ever-evolving list of bands that just sprung out of nowhere, and are the best thing you’ve heard in ages. They’ve got a really cool jazz/hip-hop/tangy-soul vibe going similar to the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, Jaala and 30/70.

Really looking forward to see which direction they take in the studio ,as the only time you can listen to their tunes right now is live – yep, they’re that fresh.

Yomi Ship

One of my favourite bands to emerge in the last year or two. Yomi Ship delicately glide through musical landscapes that even [Animals As Leaders’] Tosin Abasi would be happy to have constructed.

They’re so many years ahead of the wave that at times you look at the crowd and everyones just intently watching so they don’t miss how they transition.

The three-piece have a huge future ahead of them and if you like bands such as The Mars Volta, Animals As Leaders, Tool, or even Sigur Rós at times, then Yomi Ship is a must-watch.

Haircare

The latest project from the beautiful brain that brought you Spaceman Antics, Haircare are a lo-fi psychedelic four-piece that came onto the scene early this year.

They’ve already put out two great singles which sound exceptionally great recorded, they’ve nailed what direction they want to head into straight from the first release, and I’m really looking forward to seeing if there’s an album in the works. Great band.

Flossy

Perth Punk is truly alive, and Flossy have adapted that rawness unto their own. Always a great act to watch live; thunderous rhythm section, loud guitars, and great harmonies.

They’ve got a solid catalogue of supports already under the belt, a national tour and an A-list of singles. 2019 will definitely be a breakout year.

Butter

A great experimental hip-hop act that is making huge waves around Perth. There was a point where everyone was telling me to watch them, so to snag them for Noggin-Floggin is a treat.

They’re like Gorilaz, MF Doom, and Mos Def reinvented – definitely a must see for any hip-hop fan.

Moth

A raw, grungy three-piece with a bright future. Saw them live a few months back and I was really impressed. They did a cover of ‘Berlin Chair’ by You Am I and it was on par (if not a teensy bit bit better) than the original (sorry Tim Rogers, but it was amazing).

The rest of the set kept the same intensity, and everyone in the room was a fan by the end. Really looking forward to seeing them again.

Mal De Mer

The first time I heard Mal De Mer I was hooked. It’s like Dusty Springfield stumbled into a time machine with her whole band and appeared in Perth.

‘Wet Socks’ is a great track that slithers around and gets the nod of approval with every beat. Definitely one of the smoothest tunes to be dropped from 2018.
