Vladimir Putin’s least favourite band, Pussy Riot, have claimed responsibility for disrupting the World Cup final in Moscow. The group’s latest political demonstration saw four members run onto the field dressed as policeman.
“NEWS FLASH! Just a few minutes ago four Pussy Riot members performed in the FIFA World Cup final match — “Policeman enters the Game” the group stated in a Facebook post.
The field invasion was internationally broadcast very briefly. Pussy Riot posted a video of their protest, however it has been removed from their YouTube for containing copyrighted content belonging to FIFA. How convenient.
The purpose of the protest
The political demonstration was staged with the following demands in mind:
1. Let all political prisoners free.
2. Not imprison for “likes”.
3. Stop Illegal arrests on rallies.
4. Allow political competition in the country.
5. Not fabricate criminal accusations and not keep people in jails for no reason.
6. Turn the earthly policeman into the ‘heavenly’ policeman.
A history of ‘hooliganism’
The group made worldwide headlines when multiple members were sentenced to 2-years imprisonment after staging a political protest in 2012. The band performed their ‘punk-prayer’ “Holy Shit” inside Moscow’s main cathedral to condemn the Russian Orthodox church’s close ties to President Vladimir Putin.
The women were convicted of ‘hooliganism motivated by religious hatred’, with Judge Marina Syrova stating they had “crudely undermined social order”.
