Controversial rapper Kodak Black has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to a litany of weapons charges.

The 22-year-old rapper, real name Bill K. Kapri, was arrested back in May on weapons charges, he pleaded guilty to charges in August.

The musician was detained before his scheduled performance at Rolling Loud Festival in Miami. Kapri is accused of providing false information on federal forms used to purchase three firearms from a gun shop in Miami. One of the weapons purchased was found at an attempting shooting in Pompano Beach, prosecutors claim that “a rival rap artist was the intended target”.

Kapri initially pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and was released on a $550,000 bond and placed house arrest. However, federal prosecutors appealed the decision and Kapri was incarcerated without bond after he was considered “a danger to the community”.

On Wednesday, US District Judge Federico A. Moreno sentenced Kapri to 46 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The rapper faced a maximum of 10 years in prison, with prosecutors pushing for an eight-year sentence. Judge Moreno acknowledged that black had made anonymous donations to charity in the past.

“After the court was apprised of all the facts and circumstances of this case and the good charitable work that Bill has done over the years, the court rejected the government’s request of 96 months and sentenced Bill to 46 months,” Black’s lawyer Bradford Cohen told BBC News.

Kodak Black took to Instagram to ackn0wledge the news of his arrest. “Hold It Down While I’m On Lock. Calling Shots From The Box #Literally 🎯🤞🏾,” he wrote.
