Back when Jack & Meg White first toured Australia in 2000, they played small pub shows and crashed on friends and friends of friends’ floors. At the time, they also still had copies of their second single ‘Lafayette Blues ‘for sale. If you were lucky to pick up one of them get it insured now, because a rare copy of that single has just sold to an anonymous buyer for $US18,000. Yes, $18,000 for a seven inch record!
It’s worth so much because the original covers weren’t ready in time for the launch at Detroit’s Gold Dollar Club, so Jack White and label head Dave Buick hand painted 15 covers for the launch which they then sold for $6. What’s more amazing is that the single was one with a cover painted by Buick – one with original Jack White artwork would be worth considerably more.
