The Red Hot Chili Peppers made their live return over the weekend, performing a seven-song set that saw them cover Jimi Hendrix and The Allman Brothers Band.

Earlier this year, the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed at the Brazillian leg of Lollapalooza before taking an extended break from the live stage. In the meantime, the band haven’t exactly been lazy, with the rockers having hit the studio, while guitarist Josh Klinghoffer has teamed up with former drummer Jack Irons.

However, as The LA Times reports, the band made their live return on Saturday night, performing at an annual gala for Los Angeles’ Silverlake Conservatory of Music.

Held in honour of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and music executive Mo Ostin, the event also featured performances from the likes of Lindsey Buckingham and k.d. lang. However, it was the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ set that was arguably the most notable, featuring covers from the likes of The Allman Brothers Band and Jimi Hendrix.

Following their opening cover of ‘Ramblin’ Man’, the group dipped into their back catalogue, performing tracks from 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik, 1999’s Californication, 2002’s By The Way, and two tunes from their most recent album, The Getaway.

However, before they waved goodbye to the crowd, the Red Hot Chili Peppers also treated the audience to a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Purple Haze’.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the group have covered Hendrix, with their sets having featured a appearance of the 1970 track ‘Fire’ since they first formed. While the song has also appeared on albums and singles over the years, the band’s cover became rather infamous back in the ’90s, when they performed it during an actual fire at the controversial Woodstock 1999 concert.

At this stage, it’s not clear when Aussie audiences will get the chance to catch the Red Hot Chili Peppers performing live, but we’re assuming that when they do, the band will have a brand new album under their belts.
