With ‘Your Capricious Soul’, R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe has finally gone solo. The single, released at the top of the weekend, is the first piece of music Stipe has released since the break up of R.E.M. in 2011.

“I took a long break from music, and I wanted to jump back in,” Stipe said in a statement.

“I love ‘Your Capricious Soul’ – it’s my first solo work. I want to add my voice to this exciting shift in consciousness.”

The release of ‘Your Capricious Soul’ has seen Stipe put his support behind Extinction Rebellion, with the new track coinciding with the ‘International Rebellion’ protests which will be taking place on October 7th.

Michael Stipe – ‘Your Capricious Soul’

Fans have heard Stipe perform the song throughout this year, so while the release of the single isn’t completely left field, it does pose an exciting indicator for R.E.M. fans of what Stipe might be working on for his solo career moving forward.

All proceeds from the sales of ‘Your Capricious Soul’ go directly to Extinction Rebellion. Fans can get their copy of the single direct from Stipe’s website for just 77 cents.

“Extinction Rebellion gave me the incentive to push the release and not wait.” stipe said.

“Our relationship with the environment has been a lifelong concern, and now I feel hopeful – optimistic, even. I believe we can bring a kind of change needed to improve our beautiful planet earth, our standing and our place on it.”
