If you like your music loud, then you’re undoubtedly going to love the newest Hottest 100-style countdown that saw their very first edition presented over the weekend.

Last month, it was announced that The Faction, Australia’s heavy metal streaming radio station, was set to hold their inaugural ‘Hardest 100’ countdown.

“This is an epic opportunity for everyone who is into heavy music to get involved and show that there’s a strong voice for our scene,” said Tim Price, founder of The Faction, at the time.

“Vote for the best heavy songs of all time, vote for Australian heavy songs, vote for the most obscure black metal band you can think of – if it’s good, vote for it – who knows what might end up in the countdown.”

After a month-long voting process, the very first Hardest 100 was counted down on Saturday, March 17th, and undoubtedly served as a proper tribute to the 50th anniversary of the genre it was aiming to honour.

Kicking things off with Lamb Of God’s ‘Redneck’, the countdown took a well-guided tour through new and old classics, while sampling liberally from the genres of screamo, thrash metal, alt-rock, post-hardcore, and so much more.

Coming out on top of this year’s countdown was none other than Architects’ ‘Doomsday’ (which if you’re wondering, also scored #139 on this year’s Hottest 100), proving that us Aussies definitely love our music loud these days.

“The votes from The Faction listeners have produced a stunning list of songs that prove why metal is among the most successful genres in the world,” stated Tim Price.

“From Black Sabbath through to Architects, just as The Faction is a celebration of metal in all its forms, The Hardest 100 has well and truly delivered a flag to wave for the genre.”
