Catchy is the best way to describe the music of Cub Scouts and their first EP, Told You So.
It’s in the harmonising vocals of “Hands” and “Scream” and in the sleek bassline of “Told You So” that this becomes clear.
With the release of their debut EP the Brisbane five-piece solidify their status as one of the country’s top young indie pop acts. With its infectious keyboard riff and instantly recognisable vocals, album opener “Evie” is one of the songs of the year.
“Do You Hear” is very much in the same vein as the opener, with the driving verses all building to a crescendo in the chorus. Told You So shows a more diverse sound of the largely pop-oriented rockers with a darker sound really coming to the fore, though it still maintains the sensibilities the band has become known for.
There’s enough diversity on the recording that shows this outfit really do have a future in not only Australia but overseas as well. After Perth band San Cisco were recently signed by international record label Fat Possum there’s no reason why Cub Scouts can’t follow suit and make a name for themselves abroad.
Their appeal as a young and talented catchy pop band will give the Brisbane natives a huge chance of gaining a larger legion of fans as the years go on. It will be interesting to see what they bring to the table with a full-album release.
