When the trailer was released for the upcoming King Gizzard record, the words ‘psychedelic western audiobook LP’ were used as indicators of what to expect along with some striking visuals.
It would be hard to find someone who could have pointed to this as the band’s likely next release.
Needless to say after the release of their extremely accomplished debut record last year, 12 Bar Bruise, the 7-piece outfit have again proved themselves as one of this country’s finest new bands.
Written and narrated by Broderick Smith, former frontman for The Dingoes and father of King Gizzard member Ambrose Kenny-Smith, the story is a true old school Cowboys and Indians tale broken into six chapters.
From the opening lo-fi crashes of Eyes To The Sky, the immediate influences of classic western soundtracks are apparent. Ennio Morricano’s iconic theme for The Good, The Bad & The Ugly is the best example for the band’s psychedelic spaghetti western infused sound.
There’s no question Smith’s narration is absolutely inspired, adding a distinct American tinge to his crackly vocals. The most exciting part of this record is the way the group operates as a purely instrumental ensemble, creating vivid imagery and mood with their cinematic dynamics and flourishes.
The trailer for the album serves not only as a tantalising look into what the band have created musically but more importantly the visuals stay with you as you listen to the record from start to finish.
Not only have King Gizzard produced an awesome, eclectic record, they’ve set the precedent for easily following their own musical path and creating far more exciting prospects in the future.
