The triumphant return of punk-rock favourites Fall Out Boy has turned some heads, and rightly so with their surprising album Save Rock And Roll receiving only a few weeks of promotion. The band entered hiatus in 2010 while at the top of their game, but they’re back for more with one hell of a new record.
‘The Phoenix’ builds up suspense quickly as vocalist Patrick Stump prepares you with his chant “put on your war paint”. From the get go, this becomes a classic hit for the band with the rhythmic chords and the catchy chorus. ‘My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light ‘Em Up)’ has the same vibe with fast-paced drums maintaining the momentum.
Each track is filled with freshness and spice embedded in the well-known Fall Out Boy style. The record progresses organically saving the most interesting songs until last.
A surprise to many dans, the one and only Courtney Love features on this album. Stump steers ‘Rat A Tatt’ harmoniously only to br interrupted by Love who interjects with spoken-word during the verses. Towards the end she attempts to drop some melody in to fit with Stump but fails miserably.
If you think that was an odd guest feature, brace yourself for the closing title track. Save Rock And Roll features Sir Elton John who surprisingly fits in incredibly on this track. The mood, pace and atmosphere is perfect in preparation for his duet with Stump.
Every track has something special and is one that you can keep spinning without losing interest. Congratulations Fall Out Boy, it seems like you might have has a hand in saving rock and roll.
