Stray Current

Having recently triumphed in Triple J’s Unearthed competition to secure a coveted spot alongside the likes of The National and Mumford & Sons at this year’s Splendour In The Grass festival, Melbourne’s Baptism Of Uzi have reaffirmed their extensive hype with the release of five-track EP Stray Current.

Impressively distinct and highlighted by colourful soundscapes, Stray Current is an EP of inventive inspiration that truly captures the wonderful diversity of the pop-rock four piece.

Consisting of Thomas Battersby on guitar, Leif Bruce on drums, Lucien Richter on bass, and Bojon Stojanov on guitar/vocals, the band blends progressive melodies with psychedelic jams, creating a fusion of progressive funk that explodes in perfect harmony.

Combining structured ambience with an instrumental crescendo reminiscent of Pond, opener “Intro” is the perfect builder, while comparable drone and stormy percussion highlights the intensely synthesised “Carnal Need”.

With sonic soundscapes and bouncy Krautrock groove suggestive of Britain’s Electralane, “Fire Penguin” is the EP’s main highlight, while eclectic blends of hazy riff and jumpy bass dominates “Believe”.

Fan favourite “Stray Current” concludes the track list with a refined composition of psychedelic pop that instantly bookmarks the release as a potential contender for EP of the year.

Indeed, the imposing ability of Baptism Of Uzi to incorporate blissful harmonies and unique atmospheres is something to behold.

In a miserly 17 minutes, the band has given fans an exciting example of their relentless sound, and an EP of undeniable quality.
