If you’re looking for some great punk rock laced with ska, packed full of humour, and topped off with some classic drug references – look no further.

The Bennies’ Rainbows In Space is an eclectic sophomore record. Opening track ‘Party Smashers’ throws you in the deep end with its alien-esque synth, classic ska bassline, and full force drums.

The appearance of brass instruments in ‘Anywhere You Wanna Go’ really strengthens the track and adds that traditional ska feel. The chorus line “Hey! Ho! Anywhere you wanna go!” is so catchy that you’ll be moving and grooving in no time.

‘Sensi Mi’ is punk reggae, and the slower tempo in comparison to the previous tracks is a really nice contrast. The lyrics are genius/pure hilarity, packed with great lines including “I’m not the type to go and smack a bitch unless it’s Mary Jane /  Yo, I hit that shit!”

The hilarity continues in ‘Let’s Go Get Stoned’. The track begins with a recording of a school visitor introducing a class to “a green leafy substance”.  The song is driven by a real funky bassline, carrying on the slower tempo and great brass section.

‘Frankston Girls’ has a strong grunge vibe and is one of the heavier tracks on the album (and an ode to the women who reside in the far south suburb), while ‘Sky High’ wraps up the record well with an infusion of reggae, brass, and electronics.

Whilst managing to sound like Blink-182 crossed with The Specials and a little bit of Bob Marley, The Bennies have produced a well balanced album. Rainbows In Space might be one of the most exciting releases of the year.
