With the 2021 Hottest 100 set to take place on January 22nd, 2022, we here at Tone Deaf have decided to take a stroll down memory lane, recapping the countdowns of yesteryear in the lead-up to the latest edition of musical democracy. Today, we’re taking a look back at the Hottest 100 of 2010.

Taking place on January 26th, 2011, and attracting over 1,260,000 votes, the triple j Hottest of 2010 was the 18th annual countdown held by the station which limited votes to songs released in the last year.

Following on from 2009’s memorable incident in which the winning track was leaked in advance, it’s fair to say that listeners were keen to see what sort of controversy the 2010 countdown might bring with it.

Thankfully, it was a rather normal poll, with an Australian artist returning to the top of the countdown since 2006. Hitting #1 was Angus & Julia Stone’s ‘Big Jet Plane’, which had originally been recorded by Angus Stone’s solo project, Lady Of The Sunshine, the previous year.

Incidentally, Angus & Julia Stone’s entry was the first time since The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’ in 1994 that the winning track featured a female vocalist, and the first time since Spiderbait’s ‘Buy Me A Pony’ in 1996 that the winning act featured a female member.

At #3, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool charted with ‘Dance The Way I Feel’. Sadly, the band’s frontman Charles Haddon, had passed away in August of 2010 following a performance in Belgium.

While the track had already garnered enough traction to chart highly in the countdown, many listeners believed that the band’s top three placing may have been affected by Haddon’s death.

Close behind at #5, Boy & Bear’s cover of Crowded House’s ‘Fall At Your Feet’ became the equal-highest charting cover song in a countdown, tied with Spiderbait’s cover of ‘Black Betty’ in 2004, and Björk’s cover of ‘It’s Oh So Quiet’ in 1995.

Meanwhile, Kanye West’s ‘Runaway’ at #14 became the equal-longest song in a countdown. At 9:08, only Green Day’s ‘Jesus Of Suburbia’ in 2005 has matched the track to date.

At the end of the day, triple j’s Hottest 100 for 2010 featured songs by 65 different artists from a total of 8 countries, including 51 from Australia, 21 from the USA, and 17 from England.

Arcade Fire, Birds Of Tokyo, Bliss N Eso, Gorillaz, Gypsy & The Cat, Mark Ronson & The Business Intl, Pendulum, and Washington were the best performing acts of the countdown, scoring three tracks each, while a further 19 artists charted twice.

Also, if you’re keen on some of the more obscure facts, the shortest track to appear in the countdown was Vampire Weekend’s ‘Holiday’ at 2:18, while the longest was Kanye West’s ‘Kanye West’ at 9:08.
