With the 2021 Hottest 100 set to take place on January 22nd, 2022, we here at Tone Deaf have decided to take a stroll down memory lane, recapping the countdowns of yesteryear in the lead-up to the latest edition of musical democracy. Today, we’re taking a look back at the Hottest 100 of 2015.

Taking place on January 26th, 2016, and attracting 2,094,350 votes, the triple j Hottest of 2015 was the 23rd annual countdown held by the station which limited votes to songs released in the last year.

Following on from the 2014 countdown which saw a concerted effort to rig the countdown with the inclusion of Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’, the 2015 edition of the poll was again targeted, despite the inclusion of the new “don’t troll the poll” rule.

While a campaign that aimed to get Justin Bieber into the countdown was implemented, he did not appear in the final list, and triple j confirmed that no songs were disqualified, meaning this campaign was just a pretty poor effort overall.

However, this plan to impact the poll did not manage to overshadow the rest of the countdown, with The Rubens hitting the top of the chart with ‘Hoops’, making them the second Unearthed band after Vance Joy in 2013 to take out the top spot.

Likewise, The Rubens managed to become the first band since Augie March in 2006 to chart at #1 without any other tracks in the countdown.

The countdown also began with something of a comical start, with presenter Lewi McKirdy played the #98 and #97 songs in the wrong order. After playing Methyl Ethyl’s ‘Twilight Driving’ in the place of Major Lazer’s ‘Be Together’, McKirdy realised his mistake and read the correct order of tracks.

At the end of the day, triple j’s Hottest 100 for 2015 featured songs by 73 different artists from a total of 9 countries, including 53 from Australia, 21 from the USA, and 15 from England.

Courtney Barnett and Tame Impala were the most successful artists of the countdown, with four tracks each. Bring Me The Horizon, Florence And The Machine, Major Lazer, and The Wombats all charted twice, as did Benjamin Joseph, who appeared with both SAFIA and Peking Duk. 14 other artists also appeared twice.

Also, if you’re keen on some of the more obscure facts, the shortest track to appear in the countdown was Halsey’s ‘Ghost’ at 2:34, while the longest was Tame Impala’s ‘Let It Happen’ at 7:47.
