Described by Rolling Stone mag as ‘Australiana Alt country at it’s finest’ Sal Kimber and her band ‘The Rollin’ Wheel’ are pleased to announce their wheels are spinning north again.

After a breather from the road, the five piece are back in the saddle: writing and recording their third album and hitting the road during November with an East Coast Tour. A while between drinks on the East Coast, Kimber and band will be stepping on stage in Sydney, Maitland, Wollombi, Brisbane, Mullum Music Festival and even the odd bush block concert in rural NSW.

You released your last album with the Rollin’ Wheel in 2011. When can we expect new releases from yourself and the band?

We started the adventurous recording process for our third album a couple of months ago, we popped a few songs down, twas super lovely to be back in the cosy yikesville studio (yikesville is acclaimed produced Shane Omara’s mud brick home recording studio in Melbourne Town) Recording with the band is one of the most enjoyable parts of this whacky music journey, I like to stretch it out as much as I can ;) but we aim to have a single out by March 2014

How do you think the new material will differ from your older work?

I have been super selective with song choice this time round, every album I get more and more selective, I think it can be a tad excrutiating for the band- I think they tend to dig most of what I bring to the table but I can be painfully self critical so they don’t get to hear half of what I write, having said that Buffy (my sister and band mate) recently inherited my old phone and discovered an archive of unheard songs, some are pretty daggy. After 5 years of pretty much the same line up, there is a deep trust between us all- we are keen to challenge ourselves and each other with this next album, it feels exciting to be back behind the recording wheel.  I have been listening and loving the wave of indie electorinica that is alive in Aus at the moment, so you never know ‘alt country electronica’ could be coming your way soon ;)

What have you been up to since the release of your self-titled album in 2011?

After the release of the album in 2011 we toured heavily all around Aus, during one chapter we played something like 36 shows in 8 weeks while all holding our full time day jobs (thank god for the fake medical certificates eh?!) 2013 on the other hand has been very gentle and quiet for the Rollin’ Wheel, we consciously chose to take a little breather and have some individual adventures -Cat and Macca have been touring Aus and O/S with a few other artists, Buffy joined a recycled string band and I tried my hand at a musical theatre- the awesome ‘Vandemonian Lags’ show, alongside Timmy Rogers, Micky Thomas, Jeff Lang etc, was almost a bit too much fun.

You’re playing Mullium Music Festival and a bunch of other dates in the coming months. What can the uninitiated expect from your live show?

We dig playing together as a band, I think that comes across to the punter- we like to share stories thru song, we like to see people moving their toosh-it’s hard not to produce a smile while watching our drummer Catty in action- she’s pretty captivating, so much so I have been thinking of getting a rearview mirror on my guitar.

What are you most looking forward to about heading over to the 2013 Mullum Music Festival?

This will be our fourth Mullum, we have made so many gorgeous friends up there. Last year we didn’t play cause we were on our breather and we deeply missed the annual pilgrimage.. We are all a little in love with Mullum.

What records have you stolen from your parent’s record collection and why?

Shhh I literally stole my dad’s ‘James Taylor Greatest Hits’ last year and can’t find it. It was the double disk one with James’s signature, I am still hunting for it- sorry Pa Kimber. When I was a teenager I desperately tried to be cool with my choice of music –I would rock out to triple j hottest 100 hits with my friends at school, but at home I basked in the sonic smooth docile tones of JT and Randy Crawford, played air guitar to Bonnie Rait and spent afternoons analysing the lyrics of Joni M.

What’s on the cards for the rest of the year and early 2014?

We are jumping on the road in a few days time for our East Coast Tour. Buffy and I will be doing most of the driving while we fly the rest of the band around, you can spot us throughout November crusing down the Hume to Sydney, Brisbane etc, in our family station wagon with a trusty 6×4 container trailer on the back.
