“An open book” – one way of describing Sam Smith when it comes to his thoughts on gender identity.

The ‘Stay With Me’ hitmaker appeared on Jameela Jamil’s latest series I Weigh Interviews, and was asked about what a “non-binary, genderqueer identity” means to him.

In response to this, he states, “You do not identify in a gender. You are just you… your own special creation,”

In this candid interview, he adds, “That is how I take it. I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between — somewhat on the spectrum.”

The lauded American singer is known for openness around his mental health issues. He continues, “I’ve always had a bit of a war in my body and my mind…I do think like a woman in my head at times,”

He confesses, “I’ve sometimes sat there and questioned, do I want a sex change? It’s something I still think about, but I don’t think it is.”

In a 2017 interview with The Sunday Times, Smith gave another candid talk about gender identity. Here, he stated he wasn’t quite sure which term best identifies him. “I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man,” he shared.

Smith also addressed issues around his struggle with body image. He made references to his decision to get liposuction at the ripe age of 12.

“When I was a kid, I was chubby…and then it would get worse and worse and worse and I was holding a lot of weight in my chest. When I hit 11 years old, I went to the doctor’s. I was so self-conscious that it was affecting my mood every day and my life as a teenager,” he shared.

“I had liposuction, I was 12 years old.”

Smith continued. “At the time I think I was very happy about it. It didn’t really change anything. I think I put the weight back on in two weeks because I hadn’t figured out my relationship with food, so it didn’t really change anything. But being 12 years old and having liposuction on your chest is quite a big deal.”

Despite all these topics being difficult to talk about in a public forum, Smith posted on Twitter after this interview was released.
