It’s been a busy 12 months for San Cisco, who shot to fame off the back of their breakthrough single “Awkward” which was voted into the seventh position in the Triple J Hottest 100 countdown for 2011.
Coming off the back of their self-titled debut album which was released at the end of 2012, San Cisco are now making waves overseas for another reason – their cover of Daft Punk’s new single ‘Get Lucky’ for Triple J’s Like A Version.
If you’re not familiar with Like A Version, every Friday morning a musician or band comes into the Triple J studio to play one of their own songs and a cover of a song they love. The Fremantle-based group nailed the performance and the video on Youtube has gone viral across the internet.
This morning the video, which was only uploaded on May 31st, had racked up an impressive 1.2 million views, no doubt earning the band countless fans overseas as well as back home.
Bassist Nick Gardner told Tone Deaf in an interview at the beginning of the year that the groups Facebook page has been inundated with international fans. “If you look at the distribution of our Facebook likes, you’ll see a lot of them are from Mexico which is really cool.”
“I’ve never been there but I’d love to go one day,” says Gardner. “Hopefully it means we’ll be able to play there in the future. It gives us something to look forward to!”
After releasing their self-titled debut album to critical acclaim (including the favour of Tone Deaf) at the end of last year at home in Australia, the four-piece embarked on a sold-out national tour and more than three months on the road overseas, blitzing SXSW and crowds across the US and the UK.
The trip overseas was made possible after receiving $20K in government funding as a successful applicant to the Arts Council’s International Pathways 2012 grant scheme. Other successful applicants including Saskwatch, Sarah Blasko, and The Rubens.
Their busy 12 months has also included an international deal inked with influential American indie, Fat Possum Records.
But if you think 1.2 million views sounds impressive, you should take a look at the music video for “Awkward”. Published on the band’s own Youtube channel, the video has nearly received an incredible 4.5 million views.
San Cisco’s Youtube success is just the latest in a string of awards and accolades, include coming in at #10 on Triple J” Listeners Top 10 Albums Poll” in 2012, as well their singles “=’Wild Things’ and ‘Fred Astaire’ being voted into positions 53 and 48, respectively in the 2012 Hottest 100.
