This weekend, 10 of Australia’s finest performers will face off in the hope of representing the country in the world’s most bombastic song contest, Eurovision. From glittering pop dreamers to smooth crooners, the wealth of talent presented in our bumper crop of contenders is simply impeccable, representing the universal potential of our very own homegrown talent.
With voting taking place on Saturday, there’s currently a clear favourite leading the pack – Brisbane’s pop-group Sheppard.
On a continual wave hook-laden success, Sheppard have spent the last five years crafting their stadium-conquering, sleek pop sound and an enthralling live show, smashing charts and records in the process.
Having toured internationally alongside the likes of Justin Bieber and Little Mix, and captured the hearts of European radio listeners, Sheppard’s worldwide credentials are stacked high. Adding a Eurovision entry to their already stacked global resume would be incredibly fitting.
2018 was a massive year for the band, landing their first ever spot Number 1 spot on the ARIA charts with Watching The Sky, with single ‘Coming Home’ nabbing the title of being the#13th most played song on Australia radio that year.
‘Coming Home’ also gained traction in Europe, sitting at number 1 on the Dutch airplay charts for 5 weeks and was also featured during the highlights reel of every World Cup match aired on Dutch TV.
Now, ‘On Way My’ is on its way to serving the band their Eurovision dream, storming the charts worldwide.
Sheppard – ‘On My Way’
The track managed to wrack up a massive 290k plays on Spotify in just under a week – massive feet for any independent artist to achieve. Peaking at the #9 spot on the Australian iTunes chart, the track was the number 1 most added track on Australian radio beating out monoliths 5 Seconds Of Summer and Lauv.
Sheppard’s strong visual direction (a must for any Eurovision entrant) is also catching the eyes of the world right now, amassing 200k view on YouTube and Facebook.
If you’re wondering whether it’s caught the ears of Eurovision’s core audience, the track has been added to FFN, on Germany and Belgium’s top radio stations.
‘On My Way’ is an unapologetic pop anthem, teaming with positivity and oozing an ethereal aura in its iPhone-light sway-worthy chorus and quirky instrumentation. Frontman George Sheppard described the song “as being about someone making their way back to the person that they love,” a sentiment sure to get the voters teary-eyed and bittersweet.
“This song is about someone craving the uncontrollable heat and passion they feel when they are with the one they love. It’s about excitedly making their way to reunite with their lover, wherever that may be in the world.”
