Following on from reports that The Signature Lounge denied one man entry because of the colour of his skin, the Adelaide venue has been called out again after a text message was shared showing a venue employee attempting to limit the amount of Sudanese and Indigenous Australian patrons allowed into the club.
The screenshot, shared by the Democracy in Colour Facebook page as well as esteemed Australian rapper and poet Luka Lesson, showed correspondence from an employee known as Regina. In the text, Regina explains to the recipient that the venue is expecting a busy night and, as such, only 12 “properly dressed indigenous” people shall be granted entry.
Regina refers to her “concerns” multiple times throughout the text, elaborating that she “doesn’t know why suddenly we are getting so much of them,” despite Regina apparently raising her “concerns” about Sudanese and Indigenous Australian patrons to the recipient in the past.
The text also suggests ways to reject Sudanese and Indigenous Australian from the line, including telling them “Sorry guys not tonight’ or whatever excuses you can say so they won’t hold the line.”
The screenshot has been doing the rounds for close to 24 hours and at the time of publish, the venue who’s ‘About Me’ lists “All love”, is yet to issue a statement.
On Monday, it was revealed that Adelaide man Luckson Guvamatanga was denied entry into The Signature Lounge. Mr. Guvamatanga, originally from Zimbabwe was told by security that he and his friends wouldn’t be allowed entry after management spotted them on the security camera. “I was quite shocked and embarrassed to be honest because it felt like racial profiling,” Mr. Guvamatanga said via ABC News.
Following his experience, Mr. Guvamatanga wrote on Facebook, “[I] was with two of my mates — also black — [who] weren’t drunk or rowdy, just standing in the queue like anybody else only to get to the door to be told that management had told the door staff not to let us in.”
The venue allegedly reached out to Mr. Guvamatanga offering him free drinks at the club for his trouble.
