Australia has been seeing massive amounts of potential coming from independent bands in the last few decades, and the quality has only been rising thanks to music platforms such as triple j’s Unearthed, and of course, Bandcamp. One such success story is that of Skegss, a group of lads from Byron Bay who are just having the time of their life making music, drinking beers, and just being all ’round legends.
Along the way, Skegss happened to run into another group of dead set legends; Pist Idiots. Hailing from Sydney, Pist Idiots sound like a double bill of The Drones and Bad//Dreems, and are quickly gaining traction all over the country thanks to their brilliant live shows, and fantastic song-writing.
With their profile already blowing up around the country, they’re set to become one of the next big names in Aussie rock. With the group set to go on tour with their mates Skegss pretty soon, we asked Skegss to give us a review of Pist Idiots’ self-titled debut EP, which was released on Wednesday.
’99 Bottles’
It starts off with a slow heart wrenching track ’99 Bottles’. It’s a emotional roller coaster with the hook “tell my mother not to love me anymore,” that’s some shit everyone can relate to on some level. [Frontman, Jack] Sniff has a beautiful voice, and when the low down guitar comes in you get chills and a great nostalgic feeling; definitely some homage to Paul Kelly.
‘Booze Blues’
Doo-wop punk banger about throwing ’em back. 10 stars out of 5.
‘Dirt’s Day Off’
There’s a kind of old FIDLAR resemblance in the guitar but full ocker FIDLAR-esque. This shit’s gonna pop off on tour. It’s classic rock and roll, it’s got Ben Ben jumping around the living room with a beer.
‘Surry Hills’
Spooky intro gets us horny. [Jack] Sniff’s scream; phwoooooar. Epic guitar solo, too. Got arrested in Surry Hills at a show once, so this one is very relatable. It’s a bloody banger.

‘Pussy Weak’
Could imagine Jez from The Pinheads sitting behind the desk with a durry in his mouth producing this shit, head bopping so hard that it’s is about to fall off. He done such a great job producing this masterpiece. Love the honesty in these Pistys songs.
‘Fuck Off’
The first time we saw these guys, this was the song that made us fall head over heels. The song is so on obviously so relatable for anyone; we all have been rejected. The second time, they were 3 songs into their set and we knew we needed to bring them on our next tour. Our new favourite band!
Actually the best Aussie rock and roll song in the last few years, we reckon. These guys have come out of the gate so hot with their own sound style unlike any other. We fuck with Pist Idiots big time.
Pist Idiots’ debut, self-titled EP is out now, and is available for streaming on Spotify. Be sure to catch them when they visit your neck of the woods as part of Skegss’ ‘Holiday Food’ tour.
