Barely two weeks after dropping the album’s first single, Slipknot have opened up about their new record, explaining the meaning behind the title We Are Not Your Kind.

This year is shaping up to be a pretty big one for fans of Slipknot. Having released a new single back in October, and officially unveiling their new era with their first live performance in three years on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, fans clearly can’t wait for the arrival of the band’s new album, We Are Not Your Kind.

Named for a line on the group’s 2018 single, ‘All Out Life’, some fans may have realised that this single isn’t featured on the album that bears its lyrics.

However, in a new interview with Kerrang!, Corey Taylor and Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan have opened up about the inspiration for the title, and the single’s absence from the record.

“I didn’t think it would be anything more than a great chant at a concert,” Taylor revealed of the record’s moniker. “It was one of the things in my head that I could hear 50,000 people screaming at the top of their lungs, pumping fists.”

“It wasn’t so much that I thought it was benign or anything – it was definitely something that I thought, ‘This could be something really cool’ – but it took on a life of its own, and that’s when I really started thinking about the phrase; about how it could be perceived.”

Once Corey dropped the lyrics and we heard that line in ‘All Out Life’, it was like, ‘Nothing will top this,’” percussionist Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan added. “It pretty much engulfs what the whole thing is about, and it’s the best representation of everything that we need.”

“Trying to find anything else would really be contrived, you know what I’m saying? It engulfs everything we are.”

Likewise, Corey Taylor explained why ‘All Out Life’ didn’t make the final cut, effectively stating it was a way of letting everyone know the band was working on something big.

“It was kind of its own thing that really just let people know that we weren’t gone, and that we were still looking forward and working on music,” Taylor explained in his interview with Kerrang!.

“It was just such a catchy song that it made sense to release it. But now, in context with the story that we’re telling [on the album], we weren’t sure if we were going to put it on there.”

While Slipknot fans are undoubtedly jamming out to their latest single, ‘Unsainted’, followers of the nine will get a chance to catch them live later this year when they head to Australia as the support act on Metallica’s long-awaited WorldWired tour.
