One of the most famous rock bands of the ’90s, The Smashing Pumpkins are legendary for their angst-filled songs, accompanied by Billy Corgan’s often frantic style of guitar playing. Well, if you’re keen on hearing more of that music, you might not have to wait too long, with a new album being hinted at for next year.

Earlier this month, Billy Corgan expressed his desire to see the band’s original lineup reform, a wish of his that has gone unfulfilled since the band’s reunion back in 2006. With founding members James Iha, D’arcy Wretzky, and Jimmy Chamberlin leaving the band during the ’90s, Corgan remains the band’s only original member. So far, the only band member to actually reunite with Corgan has been Chamberlin, who is currently the touring drummer for The Smashing Pumpkins.

Now, as Team Rock notes, Jimmy Chamberlin has opened up in a recent interview with Rhythm Magazine about the band’s future plans, how new music could be on the horizon as soon as next year, and how he found himself back playing with The Smashing Pumpkins.

“[Billy Corgan] found himself in the position of just not having a drummer for the tour and he wanted to play the set that we’re going to play so he just reached out on email and said before he goes looking for someone to play those songs, which is obviously a long task, was there any way I could go out for this tour?” Chamberlin explained.

“It’s very exciting to go back and celebrate that music in a great context. It is embracing the friendship, the relationship and the music and proving that the music and the relationships are much bigger than all the politics from down the years. I thought about it for about a second and then said yes.”

Additionally, Jimmy Chamberlin also spoke about the prospect of new music from the group, hinting at a possibility of a follow-up to 2014’s Monuments To An Elegy being recorded as soon as next year.

“We’re talking about maybe recording next year with the Pumpkins and I want to make sure [if that happens] that I bring some really different stuff to the table,” Chamberlin said.

“The purpose of this sabbatical needs to be revealed in the music. I’m counting on everyone bringing some new shit to the table that is representative of the chance-taking that we’ve always done.”

While Chamberlin didn’t exactly touch on the idea of whether or not there could be a fully-fledged original lineup reunion in the works, fans are of course keen as anything for something like that to be announced, so here’s hoping we won’t be waiting too long.

Currently, Billy Corgan (or William Patrick Corgan, as he currently likes to be known), is off on the touring trail in support of his most recent solo record, Ogilala. Recently, Corgan also delivered an absolutely amazing acoustic cover of Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ in concert. While we have no idea if the new recordings from The Smashing Pumpkins would include a studio version of that track, we can only hope.
