In celebration of this year’s Record Store Day, the surviving members of Soundgarden have joined forces with Brandi Carlile to record two versions of their classic tracks ‘Black Hole Sun’ and ‘Searching With My Good Eye Closed’.
The songs were recorded as a tribute to the late Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell. It will be released as a 12-inch on September 26th, the second of three separate “Record Store Drops” set to take place this year in place of Record Store Day.
The covers were recorded at Seattle’s London Bridge Studio, at which both Soundgarden and Carlile recorded at the beginning of their careers.
“SOUNDGARDEN were just gods to us back then,” Brandi Carlile shared in a statement. “Total pioneers and unreachable to us in every way. We went about making our demos and cleaning the studio when we couldn’t afford the bill never knowing that in November of 2019 we would go back to London Bridge and RECORD TWO SONGS WITH THEM!!”
May 18th marks three years since the music world lost the beloved Chris Cornell.
The anniversary of his passing was shrouded by controversy, last month it was reported Soundgarden were suing Chris’s widow Vicky Cornell for withholding the proceeds from last year’s Soundgarden tribute show.
The concert was held in January 2019 with all three Soundgarden members paying homage to Chris along with Metallica, Foo Fighters, Ryan Adams as well as members of Audioslave and Temple of the Dog.

The court documents allege that the Soundgarden members are suing Vicki Cornell for “fraudulent inducement” for allegedly using revenue intended to be raised for charity for “personal purposes for herself and her family.” The suit goes on to claim that the recipients of the revenue from the Chris Cornell tribute benefit concert “have not been identified.”
It has been a continuing drama since the late Soundgarden frontman died, with Vicki Cornell also filing a lawsuit against the remaining members of the band for ownership of unreleased material in 2018.
