Lorde has fallen victim to one of the classic blunders, being pranked by Stephen Colbert during a New Zealand-themed segment of The Late Show.
If you’ve been keeping up with Stephen Colbert over the years, you would likely be aware that he has something of an affinity for New Zealand.
Between his fondness for The Lord Of The Rings (including a cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug) and his adoration of Kiwi PM Jacinda Ardern, the TV host clearly is a big fan of Aotearoa.
Now, after taking a trip to the country a few weeks back, Colbert premiered a new week-long segment on The Late Show last night, showing off his travels in a a series called ‘The Newest Zealander’.
Following an airport pickup from Ardern, Colbert chats with the beloved Prime Minister, delving into a singalong of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, asking for citizenship, discussing the country’s decision to be the first to give women the vote, their lack of snakes, and sweeping gun control.
Joining the PM for a backyard barbecue, Stephen Colbert was also accompanied by chart-topping music icon Lorde, who the host tried to prank with the old ‘snakes in a can’ routine.
After offering Lorde some peanut brittle, the musician was apprehensive but gracious, with Jacinda Ardern reasoning it must be some sort of tradition, having refused Colbert’s earlier offer.

Of course, Lorde’s face quickly turns to shock as she realises she’s been had, with Colbert defending his prank by stating “you don’t have snakes” and claiming that “the trip was worth it”. Check out the video below from the 11-minute mark.
In related news, Lorde recently revealed she was likely going to be delaying her third album following the passing of her beloved dog, Pearl.
“The bright energy I was trying to communicate to you has gone, for now,” Lorde explained. “He was instrumental to the discovery that was taking place.
“I felt he led me towards the ideas. And it’s going to take some time and recalibration, now that there’s no shepherd ahead of me, to see what the work is going to be.
“So I’m asking for your patience, as 2020 comes around and you start to wonder where the next record is,” she concluded. “I have lost my boy, and I need some time to see the good again, to finish making this for you.
