Former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable choked to death on his own vomit, an inquest in to his death has found. He was at the tail end of a three day booze bender in early June of this year, when he suffered acute alcohol poisoning causing him to vomit and block his airways. A pathologist found that he had a blood alcohol reading of 0.4, eight times the legal driving limit in Australia.
Detective Sergeant Richey Jones told the inquest that Cable had been drinking for almost three days continually, before coming home on the third night: “Stuart was extremely drunk but got a bottle of vodka out of the fridge and continued drinking it neat. He also drank Jack Daniels. He fell asleep on the sofa and (Cable’s girlfriend) Rachel later went to wake him by tapping his head and lifting his eyes.”
Sgt Jones said: “She knew instantly that something was wrong because he was in the same position she left him. She checked his airways and noticed there was vomit.” Cable was sacked from Stereophonics in 2003, but went on to have a successful career in radio and TV.
