Yesterday marked 25 years since Stone Temple Pilots released their debut record Core. At the time of the record’s release, few fans would have been able to predict the course of events that would unfold over the next quarter century, with the group breaking up, reuniting, replacing their singer, and experiencing tragic loss. Now, the group’s remaining members have opened up about what the future holds, and it seems to include new music, which should be released sooner rather than later.
When Stone Temple Pilots burst onto the scene with Core in 1992, the group saw almost instantaneous success, with tracks such as ‘Plush’, and ‘Sex Type Thing’. The group would eventually break up in 2002 after having released five albums, but would again reunite in 2008, releasing a self-titled record in 2010.
Sadly, 2013 saw the emergence of renewed turmoil within the group, with Stone Temple Pilots “terminating” frontman Scott Weiland‘s role within the band, replacing him with Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington in 2015. Weiland would later pass away of an accidental overdose in 2015, while Bennington would tragically take his own life earlier this year.
While it was reported a few months back that the group had found a new frontman following a call for musicians to audition for the band, very few details were made available at the time. Now, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone about Core’s big anniversary and deluxe reissue, guitarist Dean DeLeo has confirmed that the group have been making big plans for the future.
“We’ve been working with someone – I don’t want to name names yet – and we’re making music,” DeLeo stated. “I don’t know if he’s well-known or unknown; I don’t look at him as ‘well-known.’ But we’re writing music and we’re hopefully looking at finishing a record and putting it out soon.”
While there is minimal information about the new frontman available, an interview with Loudwire did seem to shed a little bit more light into the process that was involved with finding him.
“It was arduous. It was a lot of work. We didn’t hire people. We didn’t have assistance. We didn’t have management to go through that. Rob [DeLeo, guitarist] or Eric [Kretz, drummer] and I personally went through tens of thousands of submissions. Not once, but twice. I probably have 100 hours in total logged behind my computer going through them,” said Dean DeLeo. “We did go through those submissions and there was some very talented people, some extraordinary talented people that we got to see. But it was a lot of work, man.”
“It got to the point where I could tell in five seconds whether this person is even worthwhile. That was quite an event but needless to say we did not find anybody in all the submissions.”
While we have to wait and see what new music Stone Temple Pilots will be releasing and when, Dean DeLeo did give a hopeful message to eager fans, stating simply, “We got a lot in our pockets right now. Just wait.”
