If there’s one thing the old monarchy is still good for Down Under, it’s a public holiday. As if you needed any more reason to mark Sunday 9th June in massive red marker in your diary, now there’s a damn good excuse to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday.
A number of Australia’s most exciting garage bands are set to bring their wares to a Queen’s Bday Bash to end all Queen’s Bday Bashes, hosted by legendary Collingwood venue, The Tote. Tickets will only be available on the door, and once you read the lineup, you might want to plan getting there a little early.
Topping the bill is Sydney’s Straight Arrows, for their first Melbourne headline show since decimating the Where?House at Melbourne Music Week in November 2012. Their reverb-laden, fuzzed-out, punky garage gets the perfect compliment from Newcastle’s “shit-pop” rockers, Gooch Palms. The ‘Notorious Novacastrian’ duo will be slipping into town to rock the Tote ahead of the release of their debut album. Expect nudity.
Stars of Geelong label, Anti-Fade, The Living Eyes’ brand of surf-laden garage rock has quickly won them fans off the back of their Mikey Young-produced debut album. Others roped into the bill are fresh-faced psych rockers Early Woman, “no-fi” grime peddlers Rayon Moon, and Melbourne’s screaming, sweaty, and very smashing Scotdrakula.
Rounding out the musical delights will be DJ sets from Bitch Prefect and Super Wild Horses, while The Tote promises a surprise host manning the BBQ for what is sure to be a ‘miss it and hate yourself’ Sunday Funday. God bless the Queen indeed!
