The Beach Boys are set to release a new album! 44 years after they abandoned the recording efforts for Smile as they all went in to a drug infused meltdown, they’ve gotten off their arses (actually probably someone thinks they can make a buck off fans) and are set to officially release the album. Long time band associates at Capitol Records – engineer Mark Linett and archivist Alan Boyd – have got down to work to release the album, which will be entitled The Smile Sessions.

Although plans for releasing the record were being cooked up as long ago as 1988, it appears that the remaining band members have kissed and made up and they’re all behind the release. Although the masterpiece was never fully completed, Linnett says “the whole piece as close to as it was envisioned, or as is envisioned, as possible . . . and obviously with input from Brian [Wilson} and from everybody else.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the band’s formation and rumours are flying around about the band reforming to mark the occasion (and cash in with their retirement funding). They’re all pushing 70 now – let’s keep our fingers crossed that it happens!
