US metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada are once again touring Australia. The six piece, from Dayton, Ohio, pride themselves on their Christian beliefs and faith. This refreshing and positve philosophy and point of view is very much what sets them apart from other metalcore/screamo acts that concentrate on the more negative aspects of human existence. Tone Deaf’s Neil Evans recently spoke to the band’s vocalist Mike Hranica on the eve of their upcoming joint Australian tour with fellow US metalcore act We Came As Romans.
When did the band get together?
Through the year 2005.
Who would you cite as influences in regards to what inspires the Devil Wears Prada sound?
Early on, it was a lot of The Bled, Underoath, As I Lay Dying, Symphony in Peril, etc.
How does your faith infuse your music?
Faith is our building block, to put it simply. Faith is the only regularity in my life, and the only source of true, pure happiness. Because of that pivotal role, I feel no option but to tell others of what we stand for.
Your video clips are quite striking. Does the band have any feedback or input into their creation?
Yeah absolutely. Our guitarist Jeremy does most of our updates, and we have huge control over music videos. We like to look over and control all outlets of the band, and I like to exercise a lot of intention and focus in band visuals.
You’ve toured Australia a few times. What are your memories of the country?
Boldly, a number of really great shows. Since our first time here in early 2008, we’ve had the pleasure of playing a number of awesome shows.
What would you say has been a career highlight for the band?
I would say there are too many to name. We’ve been very blessed, but we stand non-complacent and look to expand to the utmost potential.
What does the future hold for the band?
No idea. We’ve always had modest intentions and no clue of where we would be or what we grow to.
