A rare opportunity has arisen for hard core Drones fans to catch a glimpse of their one-off live session in an old factory located in the backstreets of Fairfield, Melbourne Summer 2010.

Released independently through Shock Records ‘A Thousand Mistakes’ (Out 7th October) is a personally close encounter DVD featuring not only the live session in a rundown factory but also a full live set filmed at The East Brunswick Club and footage shot over 5 years from Germany, France and Australia.

With a whopping 4 ½ hours of content there was little left to the imagination. The elusive and humble Gareth Liddiard gives an amazing performance, he is beautifully shot and the director (Also editor and producer) Natalie van den Dungen, has really captured the feeling of the live set.

There’s an eerie sadness that transcends the screen and makes the viewer feel as if they are right behind Mike Noga (drums) in the factory sitting ever so still, yet hanging off every note played.

No cheesy effects, back up dancers or a fake exclusive group of alternative music folk hanging out in the background, the simplistic factory and stripped back setting suits the Drones music perfectly.

Watching Fiona Kitschin, Mike Noga and Dan Luscombe exchange sly glances and nods is a privilege. They depict a band that has been together for so long that they need not speak.

This is something that cannot be witnessed live unless you are one of those annoying fans that get too close to the stage, accidently taking a sip from Gareth Liddiard’s beer which you sheepishly mistook for your own. Sure that’s what happened.

The bonus disc presents high energy, grungy pub gigs in comparison to the factory live session on the first. The Drones are visibly younger, louder and sweater.

As one of Australia’s biggest and highly influential modern rock bands, this DVD is sublime and one to add to many music lovers DVD collection. I can highly recommend you get yourselves a copy, alternatively there will also be a limited edition release on vinyl to accompany the DVD release.
