Part of what made this year’s Federal Budget so disappointing was the fact that our current government claims to want to help push the Australian economy into the future by promoting entrepreneurship and new ventures.
Yet somehow the budget all but ignored the arts sector and particularly the music industry. As Tone Deaf readers will no doubt know, the music industry is fertile ground for an endless crop of innovative entrepreneurs and business owners.
Case in point, Henry and Jack Madin of Melbourne band The Harpoons have gone ahead and launched their own musical instrument company, designing and manufacturing unique handmade instruments “with a focus on utility and ease-of-use”.
“We’re both musicians, and we’re always looking for simple tools to make our processes easier and more fun,” said Henry in a statement. “I started making instruments because I couldn’t find what I wanted in music stores.”
“Hundo Instruments is an outlet that we can use to create things that we have always wanted but don’t exist yet.” Hundo Instruments will officially launch at Schoolhouse Studios with an interactive exhibition and pop-up shop on Thursday, 7th July.

The instruments, which are sleek and minimalist and include an acoustic marimba and an electronic drum-pad which you can plug into any laptop or iPad, are designed by Henry, who also works as an artist creating large, interactive, music-based pieces.
