‘My Own Soul’s Warning’ is the latest single from The Killers’ upcoming sixth album, Imploding the Mirage. It follows ‘Caution’ and ‘Fire and Bone’.
The Killers announced their sixth album in March, initially floating May 29th as the release date. However, the following month brought not just the second single, ‘Fire and Bone’, but the announcement that Imploding the Mirage would be held back.
The band claimed the postponement was “due to delays in finalizing the album.” The delays seemingly persist as a rescheduled launch date is yet to be announced.
‘My Own Soul’s Warning’ is the album’s opening track and it essentially splits the difference between ’80s Bruce Springsteen and pre-Joshua Tree U2. It was co-produced by Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado. Rado’s become a gun for hire in recent years, working with the likes of Whitney, The Lemon Twigs and Alex Cameron.
Killers leader Brandon Flowers is a noted Alex Cameron fan. He named the Sydney musician’s Jumping the Shark LP as his favourite record of 2016 and co-wrote a few songs on Cameron’s next album, Forced Witness. Cameron returned the favour by co-writing five songs on The Killers’ 2017 album Wonderful Wonderful (including the single ‘Run For Cover’). Cameron reprised the role on Imploding the Mirage.
Rado and Cameron aren’t the album’s only special guests, mind you. The record will also include contributions from Lindsey Buckingham, k.d. lang, Weyes Blood, Blake Mills and Adam Granduciel (The War on Drugs).
The Killers were due to visit Australia this November, but the status of the tour remains in limbo after the band placed a freeze on ticket sales in March. “The news is changing every hour around Coronavirus and, ultimately, we want you, our fans, to stay focused on prevention and remaining safe and cautious right now,” they said.
