The mullet has long held a special place in musical history. It was there when Lionel Richie wondered if it was him you were looking for. It was there when David Bowie told the word he was gay and it was there when he told the world he actually wasn’t.
However, by the ‘00s the mullets popularity had severely declined. No longer were our iconic musicians living for a “business in the front, party in the back” hairstyle. In fact, for a long time the mullet was solely reserved for people who drove utes and smoked cigarettes out their window.
But like pretty much every cultural trend from the 70s and 80s, in recent years the mullet has seen a comeback in popularity. Why? We’re not really sure, but it’s a thing.
With Spike Vincent announced for Rekorderlig Sauna Sounds, a celebration of all things quirky and unique, we’re taking a look back on some of the most epic mullets in recent history.
Spike Vincent
This aussie mullet-rocker released his self-titled debut album earlier this year. It’s not just his hair that reminds us of the good old days though: his album was recorded live in front of an audience, and it’s really something special. With Vincent describing his music as being “one big wall of sound”, there’s no surprise his live show is equally as enthralling.
With a matching mullet to boot, Spike Vincent is making serious waves in Australia’s indie scene with his unique take on post punk. Mullets are all about letting loose and letting the world know your true colours – Spike recently performed for Rekorderlig Sauna Sounds, stripping it back to show off his unique chops.
Matt Healy (pre-2015)
Before Matt Healy grew his hair out and started looking a bit like a shaggy dog (sorry, not sorry), the British heartthrob was rocking a pretty serious mullet with shaved sides. It was such a look that this writer had pretty much the same haircut for almost two years.
Robyn
When Robyn and Röyksopp announced their collaborative EP Do It Again, Robyn debuted her new mullet. Gone was the classic platinum blonde short bowl cut we all knew and loved. Robyn’s mullet came to say we mean business, and the EP was proof of that.
Mac DeMarco
The man, the mullet, the legend. Mac DeMarco looks like you’d see him cruising down a highway in his ute with a dart hanging out the window, but we don’t hold that against him because his music is the peak of mullet rock.
Die Antwoord
Since bursting onto the scene, Die Antwoord have been instantly recognisable by their wild looks and videos, which always feature members Yolandi Visser and Ninja rocking mullets. Visser’s platinum blonde mullet has helped make her one of the most instantly recognisable faces in music.
Carly Rae Jepsen
The woman who saved pop music in 2015 could also be credited with saving the mullet. Debuting her jet black mullet in the video for ‘Boy Problems’ the queer icon rocks the mullet look at a prom like it truly is still the ’80s.
Billy Ray Cyrus
