Good news out of Greece has been hard to come by in recent times. But maybe, just maybe, The Noise Figures can be that good news.
Their self-titled album seems so innocent, warm and pleasant on the surface. The opening track politely invites you in for a cup of tea, but when you step inside, the house is dirty. Each song has more than its fair share of fuzz and reverb in an attempt to give the album some edge.
The guys from Athens know what people want in a pop rock song: simple chords matched with catchy choruses. They have not strayed far from this philosophy throughout the album, and although it makes for a really easy listen, there is also a bit of substance missing from the record.
The collection becomes a bit of a drawn-out procession as the similarity of each song amalgamates them together. One track that does jump the fence into a grittier, fuzzylicious field is ‘Turn Off The Lights’. Whilst still keeping with their philosophy, this song has an obvious switch-up in the bridge, which gives it that extra kick.
‘Out Of Your Mind’ and ‘We Look Better In The Sun’ are two of the cleaner, more melodic tunes with rolling guitar riffs that could go for days. Whilst the ingredients are there, the band’s potential is unfortunately lost within a flood of fuzz.
