The Pretty Littles Australian Tour 2013 has been announced, with the four Melbourne music muck-abouts hitting the road in support of their first ever album.
The band write: “After some soul searching, some travelling, some asking friends for money to make a CD-ing, and a bit of recording too, The Pretty Littles have a first ever LP to release! (note: It was mainly the asking our friends for money bit).”
The Pretty Littles debut album, named Mash, (out Friday 15th November) follows what the four-piece describe as a “kinda stressful” 2012; “Not in a sold out arena kinda way… more in a playing 113 gigs worn out kinda way. There were some crackers in there though… Like selling out Ding Dong Lounge and The Tote and supporting The Vasco Era, The Mess Hall, The Cribs, The Fumes and The Datsuns. We know 113 gigs isn’t that much in the grand scheme of things, but it still made us tired, so bugger off.”
Tell us how The Pretty Littles became The Pretty Littles?
Ummm just coz we were playing love songs in the music room at recess and then we got less embarrassed and decided to record some songs at Simon’s house and they made us feel good and we showed our friends and they liked it and that also made us feel good then we asked Jono to play bass and Will to play drums and we made songs that we all liked eventually and now those first recording sound pretty funny and that was also like 6 years ago which is completely farked.
Why be in a band and what’s the best part of being in a band?
Well it’s a good way to see all ya friends. Making songs feels good too. And supporting a really great band feels bloody great.
What was it like working alongside Alex Moore and Patrick Neff for the ‘Never Felt Worse’ video?
Well they’re pretty big deals in the music video world, so naturally we were pretty nervous. Alex Moore is notoriously difficult to work with and is really rude to Patrick a lot, but Gwen from No Doubt warned us about this and told us not to worry about it because they get really great results. Alex actually frisbee’d a blank CD at Patrick’s head because someone review’d the clip and said the song was okay but the clip was hard to follow. But i think most clips are hard to follow because there is a song playing over the top of it.
Your thoughts on the viral video and overnight musical success?
Would love a viral video and some overnight success. Maybe we could smoke 40 bongs and 40 bottles of Jaga and also co write a song with Keith Urban. And then get Keith to smoke 40 bongs for the clip… or maybe before he writes the song with us… We’ll have to talk to Alex and Patrick, they did his last clip. Again, the reviewer said the song was okay but the clip was hard to follow. Maybe they shouldn’t all have smoked bongs.
We hear there’s an album coming out soon! What do you think the biggest change has been since your 2012 release of I Am Not From A Small Town and how does your new stuff compare?
Yeah! Umm there’s a little less yelling, but still some. I don’t really know, we only play 2 songs off that CD now really. A couple of the songs are less considered which I reckon make em way better.
What’s next for The Pretty Littles? What will 2014 bring?
I think Simon’s getting some work done which should pay dividends for us next year. Right now he looks completely ridiculous. I would be great if he was permanently smiling like one of those bobble head things that go on car dashboards.
