I feel it’s been a decade since I last humoured the idea of watching a new episode of The Simpsons, but the forthcoming Morrissey themed episode may have me crawling back, tail between my legs.

The episode, Panic on the Streets of Springfield, is set to poke fun at The Smiths and their crotchety old frontman Morrissey.

The Simpsons has enlisted the help of Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch to bring life to our moody, fallen frontman. Panic on the Streets of Springfield will see Lisa develop an obsession with an unnamed “depressed British singer from the 1980s”. Though Morrissey isn’t cited by name, it doesn’t take a genius to draw a conclusion with the episode name and teaser image.

Our collective patience with both Morrissey and The Simpsons is at a wit’s end, but we’re remaining cautiously optimistic. The music for the episode is set to be penned by Flight of the Conchords legend Bret McKenzie — so that’s something.

The show, which is currently enjoying its record-breaking 32nd season, has not offered much in the way of what we can expect from the episode. Will it allow us to relish the glory days of sulky, sullen king before his pivot into far-right lunacy? only time will tell.
