Camp Cope blew everyone away a couple of weeks back when they hit the triple j studios to lay down an emotional and fiery take on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’s signature tune, ‘Maps’. But according to frontwoman Georgia Maq, the band originally intended to cover a different song.

Apparently, the Melbourne trio, who have been enjoying an absolutely massive 12 months packed with accolades, charting-scaling album launches, and sold-out shows, wanted to show their love for a fellow Australian punk crew, but were shut down by our national youth broadcaster.

“I got a call from an unknown number and this girl on the phone said, ‘I’m from Triple J and these aren’t the usual channels we go through but can you come in and do Like A Version?’” Maq recently recounted in an interview with the Herald Sun.

“We wanted to do Royal Headache’s ‘Carolina’ but they said no. So we did Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ ‘Maps’ in one take.” Before we go on, can we just say how impressed we are that Camp Cope smashed out such a sterling cover in just one take? Get that baby on next year’s Like A Version CD.

Then again, they did record their entire self-titled debut album in just two days. What’s more, they did it mere months after having their rehearsal and the album ultimately went on to enter the top 40 of the ARIA Albums chart.

Tone Deaf have reached out to Camp Cope for further comment, but they did not respond in time for publication, so it’s not clear just why triple j wouldn’t let the trio cover a song by a band the station itself has extensively supported.
