Fans of Mike Skinner and The Streets are in for a treat, with the English hip-hop icon reportedly set to release two new records in the near future.
After forming back in the ’90s, The Streets burst into the mainstream back in 2002 with the release of their debut record, Original Pirate Material. Featuring Mike Skinner’s spoken-word delivery, and relatable, slice-of-life lyrics, the group went on to release four more albums before calling it quits in 2011.
Now, with The Streets in Australia for this year’s Splendour In The Grass festival, Skinner has revealed to The Daily Star (via The List) that he’s been hard at work on not one, but two new records.
While the hip-hop legend noted last year that he’s got a film in the works, it seems fans will be receiving both a soundtrack to the upcoming release, along with what Skinner calls a “duet” album.
“One of the reasons that I started it again is because I’ve written a film, which is about a DJ,” he explained. “And the album that I’ve written is kind of a musical; it’s part of the film.
“While that’s happening, I’m doing a mixtape, which is a collaborations album – and that will be out hopefully at the end of the summer. That’s kind of like a Streets duet album.”
Despite the fact that the soundtrack has been done and dusted for quite some time, it appears that the middle of 2020 will be when we can finally expect the first new album from The Streets since 2011.
“I did [the soundtrack] about a year ago – but we have to follow the fine line of the film,” Skinner explained. “We’re gonna be shooting that in October and that will be out at the end of next summer.”
The Streets kicked off their Aussie tour in Perth earlier this week, and will continue in Melbourne and Sydney, before wrapping up at Splendour in The Grass this weekend.
