It’s been a chock-a-block year for Wollongong rockers The Vanns. The band are currently gearing up to release their highly-anticipated debut record, Through The Walls and they’ve just announced an Australian tour to celebrate.

The band have given us a taste of their new album with new single ‘Deranged.’ Produced by Oscar Dawson of Holy Holy and Chris Collins, it’s a nugget of rock perfection. “The song came about whilst I was staying over in London and I had up until the first chorus written with a rough melody. Once I brought the song home it took a whole new direction of meaning,” explains frontman Jimmy Vann. You can check out the track below.

In anticipation for their forthcoming tour, the band have lifted the veil on their touring life and offered us their top survival tips, which you can read below.

Six Touring Survival Tips with The Vanns
  1. When touring with band mates in a van, ensure that all touring members luggage bags are zipped up when not in use to avoid a chaotic mess on the van floor and a mix up of clean/dirty laundry.
  2. Eat out all the time. This may not be the best decision financially, but in my estimation, KFC tastes really good. Eating this way will also lead to gaining what I like to call “tour weight”, which can act as a post-tour souvenir of sorts. See it as a belly full of memories.
  3. Use provided backline if possible. We all know that playing with your own gear will ultimately get you as close as possible to the sound you’re chasing; but lugging gear flat out sucks. Ask yourself, “is the juice really worth the squeeze? Is my tone really worth lapping a Fender Twin Reverb in the backseat of a car from Sydney to Brisbane?”
  4. When hiring a vehicle for a gig you’re flying into, there are many fine choices. In my opinion, you can’t go passed the comfort, sleekness and sheer value and reliability of the multi-award winning KIA Carnival. Plenty of room for gear and aforementioned zipped up luggage, and better acceleration than you’d expect from a car of its size.
  5. Bring a good pair of headphones. Headphones are great for those times when you just need to block out the world and retreat into your rain sounds… or music, if that’s more your vibe. Whatever turns your crank.
  6. Be sure to think long term and plan ahead with your rider. What will you need the next morning after the gig? Powerade? Eggs? Shower gel? The more utilitarian the better. Beer and tiny sandwiches serve their purpose, but so does dental floss.
