We like to party, kill the far-right political party. 2019 has well and truly been a vehicle for unexpected political heroes. First, we had national treasure Egg Boy, now it appears that Dutch dance icons Vengaboys are wielding the torch for politics.
The Vengaboys 1999 hit ‘We’re Going to Ibiza’ has made its triumphant return to the number 1 spot in Austria’s iTunes downloads, courtesy of a recent political scandal.
If you’re not across it, Austria’s head of government, Sebastian Kurz, called a snap election after vice-chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache resigned following a video scandal recorded in, Ibiza. A video emerged showing Strache offering lucrative public contracts to a Russian investor, in exchange for support of his campaign, thus ‘Ibizagate’ was born.

We have German comedian Jan Böhmermann to thank for fuelling the ‘We’re Going to Ibiza’ political fire. Böhmermann shared the music video with his 2.1 million Twitter followers on Friday, where the track was accepted with open arms by protestors.
In addition to the song hitting the top of the streaming charts, it was roared by a gathering of 5,000 at the Hofburg Palace, where Strache resigned. Truly chaotic scenes, check out the action below.
