After years on the scene, Aussie legend Thelma Plum is gearing up to release her debut album, Better In Blak.
For a few years now, Australian music fans have loved all of the fantastic tracks we’ve heard from Thelma Plum. Whether it be the folky ‘Father Said’, the immersive ‘How Much Does Your Love Cost?’, or the catchy ‘Clumsy Love’, we’re yet to hear a bad tune.
Now, Thelma Plum has revealed that her long-awaited debut album is set to finally see the light of day this year.
With The Fader premiering the video for the record’s title track, ‘Better In Blak’, Thelma Plum has announced that the album is set to be welcomed into the world on July 12th.
The Aussie muso also explained that the album features guest appearances from some music royalty, including Gang Of Youths’ Dave Le’Aupepe, Paul Kelly, and some young upstart known as Sir Paul McCartney.
Writing guitar parts for the album’s closing track, ‘Made For You’, Plum explained that the rock icon visited the studio she was recording at in New York, undoubtedly providing a masterful stroke of genius onto what is set to be an astonishing album already.
Just last month, Thelma Plum unveiled ‘Better In Blak’, explaining that the song was written about the experiences she’s faced as a Gamilaraay woman and musician.
“I wrote ‘Better In Blak’ about my experiences with people trying to take the colour from the conversation,” Thelma Plum explained.
“My colour is an important part of who I am, and over the last couple of years I’ve had people try and tell me ‘it’s not about colour’ when obviously to me it is.”
Speaking of the new record, Thelma Plum noted that the songs helped her to overcome some rather tough times.
“This album reflects some pretty dark times in my life but these songs kind of helped pull me out of it, it’s cathartic in a weird way,” she explained. “I’m excited for people to hear these songs but some of them come from grim places, so it’s a bit daunting having them see the light of day.”
“There’s some funny stuff on there, too, it’s not all doom and gloom!”
Thelma Plum’s Better In Blak is out July 12th, with pre-orders available now. Be sure to catch Plum when she visits your town during her album tour, which kicks off on August 9th.
