Play School is a beloved staple of Australian children’s entertainment. We grew up with it, you grew up with it, and we all agree it’s awesome. Don’t even front like you can’t remember every word of the theme song.
The show is often billed as a “long-running Australian kid’s show” but “long-running” might be a bit of an understatement. As it happens, Play School has been on the air for 50 years – that’s five whole decades.
The show has broadcast some 4,500 episodes and counting and it’s set to celebrate the big 5-0 this year. 50 is a big milestone and it looks like the producers went ahead and tapped a bunch of Aussie musical talent to ensure the birthday goes off with a bang.
Dan Sultan was the first to pop the lid on the news that Play School would be hosting a star-studded Oz rock special when he posted a photo of his green room door that also had the Play School logo stuck to it.
Sultan later shared more snaps from the day, including shots of him hanging out with the likes of You Am I and former Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning, all chilling on that colourful set we know and love.
“Best day ever,” Sultan wrote on his official Facebook page. “Happy bday Play School. I was star struck. Not because my mates You Am I or Bernard Fanning but because of Big Ted and Little Ted. Yes!!! Just yes!!!”
It’s not clear just when the Australian rock spectacular episode of Play School is set to air, but rest assured we’re getting ready to relive our childhoods when we tune in.
