This November will mark the twentieth anniversary of Michael Hutchence’s death, and a fan-led petition is proposing a bronze statue of the late performer be erected in Sydney.
A Change.org campaign driven by a fan site, with the support of Michael’s sister Tina, has attracted over 5,000 supporters to date. The petition suggests a bronze statue should be commissioned by the City of Sydney, and placed outside the new Entertainment Theatre in the ICC precinct, at Darling Harbour, in Sydney.
Campaigners have met with Government officials to discuss the statue proposal.
“We have tried to contain the media interest out of respect to the Government officials we have been dealing with”, organisers explain, “but this too has started to take on a life of its own.
“The #AStatueForMichaelHutchence Twitter campaign continues to gather momentum. It is evident that Michael’s influence continues to inspire a whole new generation. A significant number of high-profile people, from many different disciplines, have given the project their endorsement.
“We believe that it’s time for Michael to come home and stand proudly amongst us once again in Sydney. It’s time to honour a legend with a Statue for Michael Hutchence.”
