Are there any music genres you believe pump out songs that always sound the exact same? It’s a complaint we hear all the time, with the heaviest areas of music typically hit electronic, pop (which studies have claim actually does sound the same) and of course, poor ole’ country music, which has copped a fresh repeat-beating.
As Digg (via A Journal Of Musical Things) highlight, the ever-popular twanging sounds of the US’ south have been found to be producing very similar sounding tunes, this time by a clever YouTube user by the name of Sir Mashalot (Gregory Todd), who has seamlessly mixed six country songs into one, suggesting that despite the change of track and artist, country music “sounds the same”.
The country mashup displays the sonic component of each track containing almost identical chord progressions as well as scarily similar lyrics, “cottonwood fallin’ like the fourth of July” and “fireflies poppin’ like the fourth of July” more than suggesting that different country songs are not that different.
Sir Mashalot has copped a fair bit of flack for the mix, with many criticising him for “bashing” country music.
Defending his creation in the YouTube upload’s details, Mashalot has writes “I just want to be clear that this Mashup was made in good fun. I am not attempting to bash these songs, the artists, or country music in general. I am an aspiring songwriter myself, and I understand and even appreciate why the “formula” continues to dominate the airwaves- not only in country music, but in pop and other genres as well.”
He continued, “I simply enjoy mixing and producing on Pro Tools, and when I heard the striking similarities of these particular hits, I thought it would be fun to throw them all in a mix and see what I could come up with. And it looks like people are having fun with it too, so all the better!”
Whether you are a passionate country lover who attests that the genre does not spawn repetitive songs or an avid country hater, you’ll still get a kick out of Sir Mashalots country mix, which can be heard below.
