Homegrown hip-hop favourites Thundamentals have just done something incredible for Australia’s asylum seeker situation and they’ve done it in a unique and innovative way. They recently donated $20,000 to The Asylum Seeker Centre.
As part of their Got Love Initiative, inspired by their single ‘Got Love’ from the critically acclaimed 2014 album So We Can Remember, DJ Morgs, Tuka, Jewson, and Poncho made the donation to the Newtown charity on 4th August.
“It got to a point where we felt that simply going out and asking people to ‘take your fist and make a peace sign with it’ was becoming a bit trivial for us. We wanted to help in a more tangible way,” explains Tuka.
“By incentivising our fans to donate to a cause by buying a piece of specific merch we felt this might become a talking point for people to discuss the issue amongst their friends and hopefully raise more awareness.”
The band managed to raise the $20,0096.26 figure during their 2015 Elephant In The Room Tour by selling a T-shirt specially designed for the initiative, selling it online and throughout the tour.
One-hundred percent of the profits went directly to the initiative and Thundamentals fans opened up their pockets and dug deep, purchasing the shirts en masse to achieve the incredible five-figure sum.
“We would like to thank every last one of you who picked up a ‘Got Love’ tee over the last few months!” said Tuka. “Collectively you guys raised $20,099.26. We are so stoked that you got behind the cause and it has definitely been inspiring to feel the public support for an issue that we hold close to our hearts. Much respect.”
The Got Love Initiative will continue from here, working with different charities on further specific merchandise, live events, and more, to raise awareness and needed funds for causes that are close to the hearts of Thundamentals.
