Many great albums have started as a stage or film concept before being reimagined or downsized into an album which is a far better work of art anyway.
Such was the case with Tim Rogers’ forthcoming album, An Actor Repairs, which began life as music to accompany a script about a retiring actor, before morphing into a twelve-song standalone album when the stage show was abandoned.
‘Youth’ is the lead single, a country-tinged ballad with female backing vocals, which echoes past Sleepy Jackson records. “‘Youth’ is a song about a character lifting themselves by the elbows out of the well-spring and accepting the waters won’t cleanse them of their sins,” Rogers says of the track.
“It was written four times, first as a skiffle, then a torch, then a lament, ending as an enthusiasm… If this song came in a dream, knock me out forever.”
Rogers will be touring off the back of the album, which is out April 28. The tour starts this Friday in Adelaide, with tickets on sale from Thursday.
